Merits and Demerits

Merits

■Suppress the progress of keratoconus
It can inhibit the progress of keratoconus and reduce the necessity of corneal transplantation.
■The latest mosaic system enables quick treatment and reduces pain
Compared to conventional equipment, the treatment less follow-up, and the operation time has been shortened to approximately 30 min.
Postoperative pain is also significantly reduced because it can be treated without removing the corneal epithelium.
■In some cases, myopia and astigmatism are corrected
In addition to suppressing the progression of keratoconus, mild flattening of the cornea can reduce the degree of myopia and astigmatism.

Demerits

■High cost of surgery
Because Japan has not approved the treatment to be classified under health insurance, it is self-paid and out of pocket expenses associated with it will be very high.
■Temporary postoperative pain
There is intense pain 2-3 days after surgery, and there is a foreign body sensation, dryness, glare and haze. In addition, it may cause tearing, redness, and swelling of the eyelids.
■Temporary loss of vision
Edema of the cornea may occur, resulting in temporary loss of vision.
In rare cases, corneal opacity and infections may occur, but most of them recover with the passage of time and treatment using eye drops. It is essential that you continue to use the prescribed eye drops and that you have a proper screening.
■Not everyone can completely control the progress
The progress of keratoconus is rare after the corneal cross-linking surgery.
In this case, we can give you additional surgery free of charge within a year.
