Merits

■Suppress progress

It can inhibit the progress of keratoconus and reduce the necessity of corneal transplantation

■Reduces astigmatism and myopia

Originally used for the treatment of mild myopia, it is also effective for mild myopia and can reduce astigmatism.

■Less likely to cause complications

This is a treatment that is unlikely to cause complications because it does not involve the removal of corneal tissue and the incision area is small.

■In case of emergency, the ring can be removed

In the unlikely event that a problem occurs after surgery or the result is not satisfactory, the ring can be removed and returned to a state close to that before surgery.

Demerits

■It takes time for the eyesight to stabilize

The eyesight is unstable for 1 month after the operation. In addition, symptoms such as the feeling of dazzling light, somehow not being able to see clearly (decreased contrast), bleeding of light when driving at night, and the appearance of a trailing tail occur at a considerable rate. It decreases gradually and becomes less noticeable, but in some cases, it may last for a long time. Ultimately, it takes 2 - 3 months after surgery to stabilize the visual acuity of the effect of improving the shape of the intracorneal ring.

■Irregular astigmatism cannot be suppressed in all patients.

Intraocular rings can improve keratoconus symptoms, but combining it with ICL surgery does not completely eliminate the symptoms of irregular astigmatism. To some extent, there will still be poor visual effects.
