ICRS Implantation

What is an Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segment Implantation?

It is a treatment that suppresses the protrusion of keratoconus by implanting one or two transparent rings in the cornea according to the symptom.
Because the ring is made of the same polymethylmethacrylate as the lens used for cataract surgery, it is a safe material resistant to the cornea and has almost no risk of rejection.
Because it also increases corneal strength, it is also effective as a means of suppressing the progression of keratoconus. This treatment is a safe and has been approved by the US FDA in 2004. Depending on your symptoms, the thickness and length of the rings can vary.

Postoperative visual acuity

After inserting the ring, astigmatism is reduced; thus, contact lenses can be worn and correction with glasses is easier. However, because the shape of the cornea gradually changes over a few months after surgery, it will take some time for the eyesight to stabilize. If you have severe myopia or astigmatism, the naked eye vision itself after surgery does not improve much. You may be able to live with the naked eye by combining ICL treatment after waiting for stability for approximately 4 months, but it depends on the degree of keratoconus progression.

About ICRS Implantation surgery

Because the ring can be removed after treatment, its reversibility is an advantage even though it is an operation. The incision is made with the Carl-Zeiss’s femto-second laser “VisuMax”, which is safe and accurate. The laser irradiation time is approximately 10 s for one eye. The total operation time is approximately 10 min for one eye. Put on contact lenses to protect the cornea until the next day. You can go home after undergoing a medical examination after surgery.
