Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Is the applicable age of ICL and bifocal intraocular contact lenses different?

ICL can correct myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia, but not presbyopia.
Therefore, the appliable age for ICL is from 18 years old to about 45 years old (minors need parental consent).
According to the guidelines for refractive surgery of the Japanese Society of Ophthalmology, the appliable age is from 18 years old and the upper limit is “consider the age-related changes in the crystalline lens and treat patients with presbyopia with caution.”
On the other hand, bifocal intraocular contact lenses can correct presbyopia in addition to myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia. As mentioned in (Question 1), it is suitable for people in their early 40s who start to feel presbyopia to about 60 years old when they have cataracts.
