Eye Clinic Tokyo has prepared content that will help you to understand various eye diseases.
This time, it’s about Central serous chorioretinopathy.

■Central serous chorioretinopathy

【Causes・Disease】

Central serous chorioretinopathy is a disease in which water in the blood is excreted from the choroidal vessels that supply nutrients to the retina near the macula, and this water accumulates to cause retinal detachment. Central serous chorioretinopathy usually affects one eye, but sometimes it affects both eyes. It is often found in male patients in their 30s to 50s in their prime.
The cause is unknown, but it is said to be associated with prolonged stress and mental stress. Other than that, it is said that there are cases that occur during pregnancy.

【Symptoms】

Symptoms of central serous chorioretinopathy include mostly mild vision decrease, which can cause vision distortion, darkness in the center of vision, or things look smaller than they are. If retinal detachment persists for a long time or recurs repeatedly, vision may be decreased.

【Treatment】

Central serous chorioretinopathy can heal naturally in about a few months to 6 months, so patients should observe the eye condition for a while.
However, since central serous chorioretinopathy often relapses, it is better to be careful. If the area where the water is stored is away from the center of the macula, laser treatment may be performed, and laser treatment can speed recovery and prevent recurrence. If laser treatment is not possible, treatment is generally performed by internal medication.

【Summary】

Central serous chorioretinopathy is an unexplained disease with no complete treatment established. As a preventive measure, managing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are important. A balanced diet, moderate exercise and adequate sleep are very important. In addition, a medical examination and confirmation of vision at an eye clinic can help detect early symptoms, take appropriate treatment, and prevent the progression of the disease. Therefore, it is recommended that those who are concerned about vision should visit eye clinics regularly for eye examinations.
