【Eye Knowledge】About Aqueous Humor

Aqueous humor is a clear fluid found in the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye.
It is mainly produced by the ciliary body and circulates within the eye.

Aqueous humor plays the following important roles:
・Maintains intraocular pressure and helps preserve the shape of the eye
・Delivers oxygen and nutrients to avascular tissues such as the cornea and lens
・Removes metabolic waste from tissues like the cornea and lens

Aqueous humor is secreted by the ciliary body, flows from the posterior chamber through the pupil to the anterior chamber, and drains into the veins via a channel called the Schlemm’s canal.
If this outflow is obstructed, intraocular pressure may increase, potentially leading to conditions such as glaucoma.

Aqueous humor functions like ‘blood’ inside the eye and is essential for maintaining ocular health.
