【Eye-related stories】About the macula

The macula is the central part of the retinal at the bottom of the eye, is a small area about 1.5 to 2mm in diameter.
This is the most important area, as it is densely packed with light-sensing photoreceptors, allowing to distinguish colors and shapes, and keep the vivid vision.
The fovea, in the central of macula, is the area with the highest visual acuity.
When abnormalities occur, it may cause symptoms like central distortion, darkness, and significant vision impairment.

The macula also contains large amount of pigments called lutein and zeaxanthin, which have the function of protecting eyes from extreme light (especially the blue light), and suppressing the oxidative stress reactions on the retina.

Damage to macula can directly affect the vision.
The related diseases are as follows.

  • ・Age-related macula degeneration
  • ・Macula pucker
  • ・Macula hole
  • ・Macula edema
