■conjunctivochalasis

【Causes・Disease】

Conjunctivochalasis refers to a condition in which the moderately loose conjunctiva is loosened more than necessary. The conjunctiva has moderate loosening and can withstand eye movements such as up, down, left and right, but this severe loosening is called conjunctivochalasis. The loose conjunctiva is present along the lower eyelid, and sometimes rises to the black eye (cornea) when the degree is strong.
The cause of conjunctivochalasis is not clear, but it tends to increase with age and contact lens use.

【Symptoms】

The main symptom of conjunctivochalasis is that the loose conjunctiva moves excessively with eye movements and blinking, so the eyes feel uncomfortable. The loose conjunctiva forms a fold that leads to a tear flow, which will also let the tears spill out. Also, because the loose conjunctiva moves, the capillaries of the conjunctiva are pulled, causing subconjunctival bleeding.

【Treatment】

For conjunctivochalasis treatment, eye drops for eye strain or dry eye may be prescribed. However, conjunctivochalasis is a condition in which the conjunctiva is loose, so the symptoms may be improved with eye drops, but eye drops cannot cure conjunctivochalasis. In severe conjunctivochalasis or when symptoms are chronic, surgery may be performed to remove the excess part of the loose conjunctiva.
