【Column】What is the expiration date of eye drops after opening?

This time let’s talk about the expiration date of eye drops after opening.

If it is not stated in the attached document, there is a risk of contamination after opening, so it is generally considered that the expiration date is 1 month.

However, even within 1 month after opening, if floating matter or turbidity is found in the eye drops, please stop using them.
In addition, after treatment, please throw away eye drops even if they are within the expiration date.

Usually, unopened eye drops are sterile, but can be secondary contaminated by repeated use of one bottle. Therefore, in order to prevent microbial contamination of eye drops during use, eye drops are usually formulated with preservatives. (If the formulation itself has an antiseptic effect, or the formulation technology does not require any antiseptic, the eye drop may not be formulated with preservatives.)

Eye drops are sterile until opened. When an eye drop is opened and one drop is given, air enters the eye drops container accordingly, so there is a possibility of contamination if the air environment is very bad. In addition, the eye drops may be contaminated if the container touches the eyelids or lashes. Although preservatives are contained, it is important to use correct handling and using methods to prevent secondary contamination.
