【Causes・Disease】

A pterygium is a type of growth on your eye. The growth often starts on the white part of your eye that is closer to your nose. From there, the abnormal tissue can spread and cover your cornea. A pterygium is a growth that is not cancerous.
The cause of pterygium is unknown. It is said that people who work outdoors and are often exposed to ultraviolet have more risk of getting pterygium. In addition, people with dry eye or chronic recurrence of keratoconjunctivitis epithelial disorder caused by wearing contact lenses for a long time may also have a risk of getting pterygium. In addition, with aging, the flexibility of tissues decreases that lead to the abnormality of conjunctiva, which is also considered as one of the causes.

【Symptom】

The main symptoms of pterygium are eye congestion and foreign body sensation. In addition, the pterygium invading cornea may become turbid and bulged.
As the pterygium develops, and has grown towards the center of your cornea, it may cause astigmatism and affect your vision.

【treatment】

Because pterygium is not malignant tissue, if the symptoms are mild, no special treatment is needed. If congestion or foreign body sensation symptoms are severe, eye drops are needed.
If the pterygium develops and has grown towards the center of the cornea, which affects vision, surgical removal is necessary. Usually, hospitalization is not needed. It should be noted that pterygium can recur.
