About eye diseases ~ Strabismus~

Eye Clinic Tokyo has prepared content that will help you to understand various eye diseases.
This time, it’s about Strabismus.

■Strabismus

【Causes・Disease】

Strabismus refers to a state in which one eye is facing the front, but the other is facing in a different direction, and the left and right gaze do not match.
Strabismus is classified by the position of the eye. Esotropia describes inward or convergent deviations towards the midline, while exotropia describes outward or divergent misalignment. Vertical deviations are also classified into two varieties, hypertropia is the term for an eye whose gaze is directed higher than the fellow eye, whole hypotropia refers to an eye whose gaze is directed lower.
The causes of strabismus are various, such as abnormal muscles and nerves that move the eye, hyperopia, eye diseases, brain diseases, and general diseases.
Some statistics say strabismus occurs in about 3% of the population. It is never a rare disease.
Because the baby’s nose is low and wide, it may appear to be esotropia-looking. It is just the appearance, it is not strabismus, and as the face features become clearer with the baby’s growth, strabismus becomes less noticeable.

【Symptoms】

With strabismus, things can be seen double. It is also called double vision, which can interfere with daily life. In addition, in order to deal with the deviation of the focus and double vision caused by strabismus, eye strain and headache can occur.
In the case of children, they may not use the deviated eyes, which may hinder the development of vision and finally cause amblyopia. Amblyopia is a state where vision cannot be improved even by glasses. In strabismus, people may also tilt their faces to see things.

【Treatment】

Treatment of strabismus depends on the type, causes and age. In mild cases, it is a method of correcting strabismus with glasses, using special lenses to normalize the position of the eye and reduce double vision. Other than that, there are surgeries. Surgery is done to move or shorten the muscles to physically move the position of the eye.
In the case of children, amblyopia may be caused by strabismus, so amblyopia treatment is the first step in strabismus treatment. If glasses cannot improve the position of the eye, surgery may be required in some cases.

【Summary】

Strabismus is a vision disorder in which the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object, family members will notice the abnormality if someone gets strabismus. If strabismus is not treated early, it can cause amblyopia and non-stereoscopic vision. If you feel strange, please consult an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
